BoatUS Magazine contributing editor Charles Fort teaches you about changing oil in an inboard boat motor or an i/o boat engine. You’ll learn how to pump out the old oil, remove and replace the filter, then add new marine motor oil.
The oil extractor pump we used was from @WestMarineInc: Though similar pumps in different sizes can be found online by searching “oil extractor” in your browser of choice.

Was thinking about getting one of these for my car, lawnmower etc.
Doesn’t it leave a lot of gunk at the bottom? In my experience, car pans are usually flat.
Fantastic video It helped me a lot. One question though when do I use the filter wrench when taking it off or when putting it on?
Im pretty sure i put to much new oil back in. Dipstick reading is real high. Haven’t been on the water yet. Should i drain to where i am just ABOVE the SAFE reading on the dipstick? THOUGHTS? ADVICE??
I have original boat from 1998. I always used 25W-40 regular marine engine oil. 2 years ago for first time I used marine synthetic blend. When came time to another oil change after I take oil filter down in upper filter has been oil gel . Think like that never has been before. I live close to Lake Michigan and we have cold winters. My first reaction was do not use synthetic blend. In boat shop is opinion that if you use ones synthetic blend you always need to use synthetic blend. What is your opinion about ?
Thank you for the info for the lower unit and motor oil. A place was trying to charge me over 500 dollars. It looks like it’ll cost way less!! 350 for oil change and 200 for the lower unit!!
