Boondocking with a 12V Fridge – DIY RV Solar Installation with Victron Charge Controller

I recently purchase a new RV and took it out for an overnight boondock. I quickly realized that the 12V fridge was a battery vampire. Even with a small solar panel, the battery continued to drain.

In this video I will show you how I installed a 770W solar power system for about $800 using a Victron charge controller. Not only will this system allow me to boondock indefinitely, it will allow me to run small AC devices through my Renogy inverter during the day. The best part is that my batteries are fully charged about an hour after the sun comes up.

  1. Nice Ram truck!
We have a Vitrifrigo fridge freezer in our All Terrain Warrior with 400 watts of solar, Zamp 30Amp Solar charge controller and Magnum 2800 Inverter. Never had any power issues keeping it going.
    Nice job.
But we also have an ORV with Norcold propane/ac fridge and with 1600w of solar and over 1200ah of battery with Ecoflow Delta pro 3000w inverter that fridge will still use a lot of stored energy quickly on 120v.
12v has got to be more efficient.
    Thanks for sharing.

  2. 12v fridges can be quite economical, power-wise. Mine averages about 0.45kWh/day. My guess is the large fridge in the RV wasn’t designed with power efficiency in mind since while in use most folks will be trailering (7pin power) or at a campsite (pedestal power).

This is my 2,427th day offgrid. 🙂
